FACTS ABOUT ALCOHOL RELATED ACCIDENTS

  • On average, someone in the U.S. is killed by a drunk driver every 40 minutes.
  • Drunk driving causes approximately one-third of all traffic fatalities in the United States.
  • Over 1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in 2007. 
  • This number is less than 1% of the 159 million self-reported episodes of drunk driving in that year.
  • Approximately 75% of fatal crashes occurring between midnight and 3 a.m. involve alcohol.
  • In 2006 there were 17,941 driving fatalities related to alcohol. This was 41 percent of the total 43,000 fatalities.
  • Most people with DUI’s are not alcoholics.
  • 18-20 year olds are responsible for more than 10 percent of the drunken driving trips in America.
  • In 2003 about 1 in 135 drivers were arrested for DUI. That’s about 1.4 million people.
